A passion for God ... a heart for people.

Crossroads Community Church - A Brief History

Crossroads Community Church came into existense because of the vision of the Associated Gospel Churches of Canada to plant a church in the city of Calgary. In 1977 Bud Penner was pastor of Bethel Church in Kingston, Ontario, and chair of the AGC committee responsible for planting of AGC churches across Canada. One of the priorities of his committee was to begin the first AGC work in Calgary, a key western city that was then in a period of booming growth. As Bud led the committee in the search for a pastor for this new plant, it became clear that he was the very person to take on this challenge. He shared this vision with two other couples at Bethel Church. The vision caught hold and these three couples and their families planned their replocation to Calgary.

As this was being planned in Ontario, a Calgary group with the same vision began meeting in 1977 to form the nucleus for this work. Milt Ewert, then pastor of the Ponoka AGC church, came down weekly to lead them in Bible study and prayer. On June 30, 1978, Bud and Beulh Penner, David and Linda Collins, and Doug and Jane Hamm arrived with their families in Calgary to join with this group.

This small assembly began as the Calgary Associated Gospel Church, meeting in a home in the northwest part of the city. Very soon more space was needed and meetings were held in a northwest church facility. Through a merger with Mayland Heights Baptist Church, Crossroads Community Church was born on January 1, 1980. The building of an addition to the currnet facility was completed and dedicated in 1985.

Since its inception, under the leadership of many dedicated pastors, associates and lay people, the church has assisted in planting two other thriving ministries in Calgary - Varsity Bible Church and Southside Community Church. The ministry continues to touch many through a strong emphasis on worship, community, evangelism, discipleship and service.

The pastors who have served this church since it's inception have been:

Rev. Bud Penner Senior Pastor 1980 - 1984
